Sayings of the Holy Fathers
Not to have envy, not to be angry, not to hold a grudge against him who offends you, is not for all that to bear the man charity [love]. For it can be that a man, not yet loving, does not return evil for evil, because of the commandment; nevertheless he does not yet do good for evil, spontaneously.
Purposely to do good to those who hate you belongs to perfect spiritual love alone.
